Writing Assignment Design (Reid & Kroll)
Joy Reid and Barbara Kroll, in "Designing and Assessing Effective Classroom Writing Assignments for NES and ESL Students," counsel faculty to take seriously the development of their writing assignments. They identify some guidelines for effective assignments and offer the reader a number of sample assignments that illustrate those guidelines.
- What do you make of Reid & Kroll's six guidelines? Which guidelines (if any) do you think are most important? Why?
- Consider your own college education and one specific writing assignment you were given. Do you think that assignment met all of these guidelines? Was there a connection between your ability to complete the task and the assignment's fit with the guidelines? Explain.
- Select one of Reid & Kroll's sample assignments for careful consideration. What do you make of that assignment, and of the authors' analysis of it? What would you add in terms of analysis?
- Draft your own first paper assignment and review it on each dimension the authors identify. Bring 3 copies of your draft assignment to class.
