Assignment
What Role for the Quantitative in Writing Courses?
> Wolfe identifies several ways that students benefit from developing the ability to work with numbers. He also addresses discipline-specific questions or concerns about the applicability of such work for instruction in particular knowledge domains. Do you think the kind of work described by Wolfe has a place in the composition classroom? Why? Why not? Are there limits here?
> Consider the information about Task 2 of the CUNY Proficiency Exam contained in CUNY's "Information for Students" document. Does this kind of reasoning make it easier to accept some of Wolfe's points, or does it possibly reinforce the divisions we see in academia? Who is responsible for teaching students the capacities that are supposedly being tested in Task 2?
> Accept for now that your course must include an opportunity for students to practice the skills found in Task 2 of the CPE. Develop a specific lesson plan that teaches students to do this work. Also, develop a homework assignment that requires your students to bring graphical information to bear on their research projects.
