Reading Questions - Sherry Turkle
- A Middle Stakes Writing Assignment due September 4
1) In 3-5 sentences, summarize Erikson’s concept of a “psychosocial
moratorium” as Turkle describes it.
2) Turkle claims that “virtual social life can play a role
in… dramas of self-reparation” (274). What do you think
this means? How might Turkle’s example of Case (274-5) illustrate
this claim?
3) In her essay, Turkle writes, “Appropriable theories –
ideas that capture the imagination of the culture at large –
tend to be those with which people can become actively involved”(276).
What might this mean? (If you’re struggling, see the next
question first.)
4) Often, examples can help us make sense of ideas that we don’t
quite understand. Turkle offers two examples that might illustrate
her point about appropriable theories. The first example involves
her own inability to engage with ideas of identity she encountered
in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The second example is about Freud
and the reasons his ideas were “appropriable”. How do
these examples illustrate Turkle’s point?
